How big is Harvey's Lake?
Harvey's Lake is a deep, cold trout lake with a long shallow arm on its northern end created by a dam on its outlet. Its size is 409 acres and 145 feet deep.
Are there motor boats allowed on the lake? Size limit? What about jet skis?
Yes, all size motors are allowed. Fortunately, the boaters, the fishing boats, and the canoeists are very respectful of one another. Jet skis are not prohibited, but are highly discouraged.
Can you water ski on the lake?
Yes, because of the shape of the lake it makes for some interesting turns. However, skiing is not allowed near the public swimming area.
Is the fishing any good?
Usually, but bait the hook first for better results! Chunky, 4 lb rainbows are not unusual, and best caught from a boat near the deepest sections of the lake. Perch and smelt are mostly caught from shore by the younger group. (See related fishing article for more information)
Can I buy an out-of state-fishing license nearby?
There are 2 general stores in the village of West Barnet that sell licenses and crawlers. Fees are listed in the Vermont Digest of Fishing Laws that you will receive when purchasing license. Live bait can be purchased in W. Danville, some 9 miles away.
Do you have a dock for my boat?
Not at the present time. We allow boats to be tied up to our tree line in a section of the 800' of lake frontage. There is no fee.
Do you rent boats? Yes, we have 1 canoe, 2 paddleboats and 2 kayaks. Campers are always welcome to bring their own boats as well.
Do you have a swimming area?
We have two grassy swimming areas that which about 60 feet in size. They both have steps down to the water. There is also a larger public beach across the channel from us that is great for shallow water swimming and a play ground.
What is the swimming like in the lake?
Harvey's Lake is known to be one of the cleanest lakes in Vermont. No milfoil has been found. Because it 's so deep, the water is usually pretty cold, but it does warm up for some fantastic swimming in the summer.
Is there any television reception if we bring our own TV?
Usually only a local station will come in. You could bring your own, or choose to rent our TV/VCR combo. We also have a large selection of movies to choose from.
Will I be able to use my cell phone in your campground?
Cell service is very limited. A public payphone is located in front of the local West Barnet general store.
Do you have a grate or a grill that we can use for cooking outside?
Yes, we have small grills and grates that you can borrow for grilling that freshly caught trout.
Are visitors and overnight guests allowed in cabins?
Yes. Visitors and overnight guests are required to register and pay a fee. Only up to the maximum number allowed in each cabin. Absolutely NO visitor's pets allowed.
Can I bring my dog with me if I'm staying in the cabins? Yes, but only in Cabin #18 and Cabin #52. We have allowed up to 2 dogs, but size, temperament, and availably is a major factor that is considered. A
pet fee is charged.
Are the cabins heated?
No, but they are well insulated and have space heaters. They definitely take the chill out of those spring and fall evenings. RV #11 and RV #17 do have furnaces if there are elderly people or Florida visitors!
How much privacy do we have? How close are the cabins to one another?
We have tried to incorporate as much privacy as possible when building the cabins, both on the lake and in the woods. They are however, still located within the perimeters of a 53 site campground.
Do you have sites so a group can camp together?
Yes, we have a group area that has 10 sites called "The Pines ". It's perfect for up to 40 campers and a large site that serves as a campfire area. It also has its own restroom building. There are also a few overflow campsites if more campers show up than expected. We also can accommodate 2 or 3 campsites together if requested for the rest of the campground.
What about privacy and noise?
There is considerable privacy by simply choosing to stay with us in our small 53 site campground. The sites are large, wooded, and landscaped for the maximum amount of privacy. We understand that more campers mean more noise. We have a strict policy of our "quiet time" going into effect at 10:00 PM., and no campfires past midnight. Most campers are very respectful of this and large groups are always welcome.
Is it safe to camp alone?
Yes. Because we are the owners, and live on premises near the only gated entrance to the campground, we are more capable of monitoring the activity of our campground.
Can I bring my boyfriend and drink around the campfire?
Only if you are 21 years of age or older. We are a family/couple campground and ask that everyone be respectful of their neighbors, with or without alcohol.
Are there any nearby grocery stores?
There are two general stores in our village of West Barnet. The bigger grocery stores are in St. Johnsbury, Vt. (12 miles), Woodsville, NH. (15 miles), and Littleton, NH. (40 miles). We sell ice, firewood, and some clothing at our office.
Are there any nearby golf courses?
Yes, St. Johnsbury Country Club has a very difficult 18 hole golf course with a driving range and putting green. Other courses are Lake Morey Country Club in Fairlee, Vt. (30 miles), Bethlehem Country Club and Maplewood in Bethlehem, NH. (45 miles) and Barre Country Club in Barre, VT (20 miles). All are open to the public.
I love to be in nature, are there any hiking or biking trails nearby?
There is a 5 mile road that winds around Harvey's Lake. It's perfect for both hiking and biking. The Appalachian Trail runs through both Vermont's Green Mountains and New Hampshire's White Mountains. Also, the sparsely populated back roads lend a great day trip for getting out and enjoying Vermont's many seasons.
Are there any other streams or ponds to fish? There are numerous streams and ponds in the Northeast Kingdom. The Connecticut River is only 5 miles from us and produces many types of fish. The Vermont Digest of Fishing Laws that you will receive when you buy a fishing license has all of the information that you will need for the trophy fish you will catch.
Where are the nearest airports?
The closest international airport is in Burlington, Vt. (about 1 hour. 15 minutes), It's a small airport, but serves many airlines. The next closest and a fabulous ride up through the White Mountains of NH. is Manchester, NH. It serves all of the airlines and is near Boston's major hub. (about 1 hour, 45 minutes away). The Kingdom also has three smaller, light plane airports located in Island Pond, Lyndonville and Newport.
What about day trips from our site?
Our location is perfect for taking a few hours, a half day, or all day jaunts around Vermont and its neighbor state. Most of the roads are 2 lanes through quaint little villages, on your way to the auctions, Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Factory, shopping in the smallest capital city in the US, Montpelier, Vt., or trying to find your way though Vermont's own Corn Maze.
What is the Northeast Kingdom like?
Vermont's Northeast Kingdom is, without a doubt, the state's most beautiful and undisturbed region. Coined more than 50 years ago, the Northeast Kingdom - received its nickname in honor of its sheer splendor. A beloved former governor and US senator proclaimed this area so spectacular that it should be a kingdom, the Northeast Kingdom. The best part of the Kingdom is what the region does not offer. Imagine traffic jams as local farmers crossing cows at milking time. Picture skyscrapers as towering silos dotting lush farmland. Envision a sprawling landscape as fields as wildflowers. Here is a place that challenges the senses.
Do you have a telephone in case of an emergency?
Yes, our office phone is always available. If it's after hours knock loudly on the side door, or use the local payphone at the general store. Also, please feel free to give out our telephone number for incoming emergency messages, and they will be immediately delivered. Non-emergency messages will be posted at the office.
Where is the nearest hospital?
Northeast Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury is north on I-91, exit 22. (About 15 miles) Also south on I-91, exit 17, toward Woodsville, NH. is Cottage Hospital. (about 17 miles). Dartmouth Medical Hospital in Dartmouth, NH., exit 12, (about 45 miles) is one of the top teaching hospitals in the US. They all have walk-in clinics for the small incidents.
